Interpretation of 'The Woodpile' by Robert Frost

Frozen = lifeless, death, colorless, empty.
Swamp = a low lying land seasonally flooded and has woody trees.
Gray =  colorless, old, lifeless, decaying.
A small bird = personification of nature.
The uniformly cut pile of wood = symbol of industrialism, charmless and dead uniformity of machine.

The speaker here walks into the middle of wilderness. The nature is dead here. Hard snow is preventing his advance with every step, as if nature does not want another man's footstep on her breast. The day is colorless and a sense of lifelessness prevails in the air. It is very sad and melancholy environment where the speaker strolls alone. But the walk is not pleasant and the speaker wants to turn back without anymore advances.

The nature seems to act indifferent toward human. She makes her so, so that humans do not find her easy to access. When a man does not give you a name it means he does not create any attachment with you. The same way the speaker finds it difficult to name the place he is in so that he can mark and later say that he was in such and such places in the nature. The speaker names it as ' far from home' which indicates that in the middle of nature the speaker feels that his existence is not wanted here and a sense of alienation or loneliness grasps him and he feels homesick. This is just a place which is not his home.

The nature comes to life in the shape of a small bird. The over (...)

About Robert Frost's After 'Apple-Picking'

Apple= the fruit of knowledge, sin, fall of man, temptation, immortality.
Ladder to heaven = Jacob's ladder.
Winter = everything dies in winter. it is a symbol of death....
Night = is the absence of Light or Good, it seems evil and dark. Presence of ignorance.

...
The poem starts off with a few religious allusions- apple, heaven, ladder. The apple is a symbol which refers to sin, fall of man, temptation, immortality, knowledge, Heaven is itself referring to virtue, and ladder here can refer to Jacob's Ladder as stated in Bible.

If apple is a temptation it will mean that after satisfying many desires the speaker seems to have become surfeit. He still has many things that he did not try but he has already had enough. Although his life has become sinful and it is at its end, he feels that the way to his salvation is still there. He can still go to heaven.

In this world full of temptation the speaker has been looking at the world the wrong way. Although he has been drunk with his desires, this world is nothing but old and perishable and dusty and ugly.

But his disillusion came at a very critical moment of his life- when his time in this world is almost up and he is on his way to the journey to the other world.

But he already knows what awaits for him as his life was full of sins. He knows his sins will be coming back to him now to get him; his sins will (...)

My understanding of 'Mending Wall' by Robert Frost

Wall = symbol of boundary, limitation, lack of freedom, conservativeness

It is in the nature of humans to be possessive and create a personal circle into which they do not want someone else to come and go as they please. They have in their nature a sort of secrecy and definiteness and they like it to be physically emphasized everywhere.

Although in some cases a 'wall' is wanted and appreciated, being too engrossed about a boundary everywhere will simply divide the whole of humankind and they will become selfish and self-centered. They will only be kind to themselves.

The Practice of creating and supporting a wall also means that whatever happens outside my wall is none of my concern. While it may have personal justifications, it cannot be globally exercised.

There are 'hunters' and 'yelping dogs' everywhere in this world and they not only are disrespectful to these boundaries but also make a profession or enjoyment out of them. They do not care what happens to the boundaries, they will find their place and time to entertain their necessities and luxuries at any cost. Here hunters refer to the powerful people and yelping dogs refer to the people who are fed and leashed by these powerful people and act on their command mindlessly.

The maker of the boundaries in this world meet every year to renew their boundaries and they want to say that (...)

On a rainy day

It had been drizzling from the morning. It is not that I hate it. But drizzle over a long period of time seems too depressing to me. I do not know- but today a dark and gloomy emotion is stirring my heart to no ends. My eyes are wet with tears.
I close my eyes I discover my consciousness afloat in the ether far above the ground looking down upon the gloomy grey world below. I see a city, an unreal one, where half awake people walk with unsure steps, sighing heavily, to some unknown destinations. They walk.
The residences seem like the jungle of concrete- life less. The green trees have been tinted grey with the gloom of the sky. The leaves are wet and unmoved; no breath of air; they stand there- silent, bearing witness to this unexplainable sadness.
Tall, wide apartment buildings have populated the jungle. The drawn curtain, dark windows and the balconies- half hidden in the gloomy darkness show no sign of life there as if they are some sky scrapping cemeteries of this unreal world.
It is damp and sultry. So many unknown tears, unknown emotions are vanishing into the ether mixing with the atmosphere and then to the bosom of the sky; how powerful and how so gloomy sad those emotions are that such unimaginably wide, deep and large sky cannot keep her calm! The emotions of humans too become unbearable to her! On a day just like this she wears her gloomy veil of sadness- sometimes wails, sometimes weeps.
But this gloom does not seem to (...)

On 'The Birthday Party'

The Birthday Party, written by Harold Pinter, is a three act drama about a day full of inconsistent events which mentally break a man, Stanley Webber, down and forcefully taking him away from his abode.
The drama The Birthday Party presents to us an incongruous story that involves a few members of a society belonging to a seaside town. It takes place inside a boarding house run by Meg. Petey is her husband and a deck-chair attendant. The only boarder of the house is Stanley who is supposed to be a pianist. Lulu is a young girl who visits the boarding house sometimes. The story begins on a fated day when Petey brings news of two prospective boarders and this makes Stanley very nervous and anxious; and when they, Goldberg and McCann, come Stanley sneaks away from them, although later on he engages in a conversation with them but unfortunately it becomes an interrogation. They ask him a series of incomprehensible questions. Later that day, Goldberg proposes to arrange a birthday party for Stanley and Meg agrees to that. When the boarders leave for their room, Meg gives Stanley a birthday present. In the evening the party takes place. Lulu attends but Petey cannot as he has a chess game to go to. After that Meg gives a speech and everyone toasts for Stanley. But this birthday party soon turns into a terrible fiasco and everything goes wrong; when they started the game ‘old man’s buff’ Stanley attempts a rape on Lulu, Goldberg and McCann attack (...)

A Bird and The Human

There is this bird. The tenants of an apartment across the street have bought it few days back. I cannot clearly see the bird as it is housed on the third floor and my vision is hindered by the height and the protective grates of the veranda.
The bird cries day and night. Although it does not sing and has a harsh voice, its pained screams seem to have a melancholy tone to them. Imprisoned within a cage of merely three cubic feet, the icon of freedom wails with a voice that rends the sky of Almighty God. A creation which was meant to be free in the bosom of Mother Nature has become a plaything, a mere tool of decoration for humans.
I find it highly hypocritical of humans, that they shout their hearts out for freedom. They call themselves freemen and advocate freedom all over the world. They do not want to be chained. They hate being under anybody's control. They fight and die for freedom's cause. They promote the notion of freedom all around. Media is overloaded with the words of freedom. And yet, sadly enough humans are the greatest enemies of freedom.
Animals that are not intelligent enough to evade the human entrapments are seen chained and imprisoned everywhere. For their own pleasure humans have the heart to destroy the freedom of birds. Just because the bird looks so beautiful or has so many beautiful traits, it becomes an object of possession. Humans never think that a bird also has its family, it has its life, it has its own society and (...)

Three Winged Eye of Heaven

Suddenly, I don't know why, I took notice of the ever revolving fan hanging from the ceiling. It has always been there. But I never looked at it. I have never thought of it before.
It is there. Like the eye of the heaven, it always, is, there. I sleep, I wake, I eat, I do good things, I sin, and I leave it alone. But it is always there. When I feel lonely I never looked at it. But it has always been there, looking at me, pleasing me with its constant circular motion.
"Hey! what do I call you? I have never asked your name. Never asked how you are! Never took care of you! I kept using you like an eternal prostitute just for my pleasure."
" Will you ever forgive me! Never in my life have I felt for you, never. Yet you took care of me- in hot and sultry summers, in gloomy and depressing days of rainy seasons. Even when I didn't need you, you didn't leave me alone. Like an eye that never sleeps, you kept watching over me."
"O! Dear three winged eye of heaven! please, forgive me. Today, when the whole world has forgotten me, you are still there like a silent caring wife, for whom I never felt love, not even for a second. Indifference, is the only gift I ever gave you. I know, I don't deserve you, nor the care that you shower on me. Will you forgive me? Please, tell me what I can do to earn your shining bright smile?

A Rainy Night...

It’s almost 2 o’clock in the morning.
It was still raining. I looked out the window. I could see lights from two or three windows. I couldn’t see the sky because the tall buildings were hindering my vision. From a very small opening in my window I could only see very few things. There was one street lamp; standing tall and alone and fighting the darkness as the sentinel of the night. The raindrops were only visible under the street lamp.
A sweet scent of rainwater and mud wafted through the window. It was indescribable. Sweet, gentle and cool air.
I could hear the whistle of the night guard from afar. How does it feel to be on duty on a lonely sad rainy night? I wonder. Maybe he walks along the streets holding an umbrella and a stick, or maybe he smokes a puff or two!
I couldn’t hear any dog barking or cat mewing.
I was engulfed by a blanket of sadness, but I didn’t know why. Was it because I was thinking how I am playing a three way tug of war with the real and the fantasy world? Perhaps I didn’t want to live in the harsh reality, didn’t want to let go things or people I love most, didn’t want to let a beautiful TV series end because it gave me a new world to escape to from the pain and hardship of the real world?
But still everything ends. I am not married but still the thought of death tearing a married couple apart saddens me to no ends. Everything seems valueless when I think of the moment I will have to leave (...)

Happily Ever...After?

Today, after a long time, I feel like writing something- a feeling that everything around me is shrinking, I have nowhere to go, there is nothing left for me in this world, I am too old to even seek silly childish happiness- I have to write about them. Everything has become so colorless to me. Why? Every story I read, every cinema I see, and every happy couple I see, makes me sad! Why? I don’t feel happy when young couples take vows at the altar or make promises in their own individual way to live happily ever after. Why, why has it come to this? Am I becoming an unsocial, sadistic person? Is this becoming of a new monster? Is it another story of Dr. Jakyl turning into sinister Mr. Hyde?
I am afraid of myself….I am afraid of the darkness that is eating up my soul….senseless, tasteless-like an inanimate object I have become. I am indifferent to everything. I am not at all surprised when something unusual happens. I don’t feel disgusted when something unjust happens to me. People cheat me, take my precious things away I can’t say anything…..as if it will always happen. I don’t feel like fighting anymore. As if I have given up all hope. Why? I don’t really get it….I fear the hollowing in my heart… An eternal void of darkness has engulfed my very soul.
I feel pain when a boy finds a girl that he likes. But I love the struggle they go through before they tie the knot. The moment the struggle is finished I feel that darkness, a creature that is (...)

"Song of Myself" in my eyes: a rediscovery of self.

Interpretation of Song Of Myself

Section One:

In the first stanza, poet declares his oneness with someone or something. He points out that he is bound to a certain someone or something to atomic level. Whatever he possesses is also equally shared and possessed by that "someone/something."

In the second stanza it is clarified who Waltman is talking to. He was talking to a blade of a summer grass. But question arises: what is this grass? What is the relation of the poet to this simple grass? How is he bound to atomic level to this Grass? What makes him claim so? Here the grass is but an image of all pervading nature, and the nature is but the Creation of One God.

Now in the third stanza, the poet explains how he belongs to the land; how he is a Son of Man of Man of the same land, and how this land i.e., the nature is fed and melted into the atoms of blood of his ancestors and became one with them; the nature became a part of their bone, flesh, blood and skin and above all their souls. Thus the poet is bound to this nature at an atomic level. And thus he is declaring his oneness with God Himself, in Islam what we call the Fanaah state. John Donne says the same thing in his poem The Ecstacy,
"If any, so by love refined,
    That he soul's language understood,
And by good love were grown all mind,
    Within convenient distance stood,
