Daydreaming
Me and my best friend have been on a summer holiday in France for four days now. Yeah, we are in Cannes – so far so good! We have been staying in a very cheap hotel which has a fantastic view of the sea. We were lucky to be able to find that cheap of a hotel with a view like this; because not each beach is this fine. So, this our forth day as I told – great sea, great girls, great activities. And, believe or not, I found French people very sweet and kind. Maybe because this is the Mediterranean part of the country.
However, the temperature was too high, that especially at noon it becomes impossible to move! We drank a bottle of vodka and we rested in our lounge, meanwhile it was about 2 pm. Then, I came up with this great –which I thought was great- idea of daydreaming with my friend, as I asked him:
“Hey, how about sharing our daydreams with each other? For example, where would you like to be even if you were anywhere?”
He thought a little while – then: “Does it necessarily have to be anywhere? I mean, I’m all right being here with you, man.”
“I just asked, you know. I’d like to know if there is any.” I said.
“Well… How about India? Man, I haven’t been there but I’d really love to. You know, the whole belief, the whole culture really excites me.”
“Kind of an interesting choice. Well, if you ask me, it definitely has to be St. Petersburg. There are so many historical places in there that I would like to see, but do you mention that Lev Tolstoy’s home is in there as well? I would really like to see there. This excites me.
“Wow! You know, I’m not into literature as much as like you, but it was great to be mentioned that Tolstoy’s house is there.”
“You’re welcome. Well… Tell me, instead of India, where would you like to go to as a real adventure – besides a cultural trip?”
“It has to be Africa – a real safari! Man, I want to feel the life there. I mean, all those animals we see on documentaries – wouldn’t it be cool?”
“Indeed. How about… Who would it be, if you have any chance to meet a Hollywood star?”
“Hey, I can still meet.” He laughed with his typical sound.
“How about now? In here? Who would it be? You can go crazy.”
“How about Charlize – Charlize Theron? Hah, those lips and eyes, man. I would, no doubt, meet her in the first place. But… if you ask if I am fond of any star’s acting. That would definitely be Denzel Washington. This guy is terrific. I would give anything to meet him.”
“Well, it’s going so interesting. Interesting choices, dude.”
“How about you?”
“Mine is Gerard Butler. You can’t deny him – he is one of the best when it comes to action. Tell me, then – how about a musician?”
“Oh, that’s tough.” He made it tough, tough. Then, suddenly: “Yann Tiersen should it be. We’re on his homeland, as well. You?”
“Let me think. Well, I would like to meet Yann Tiersen, too. But I… I would likely find meeting rock and roll stars back in sixties – you know, it can be Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, or John Fogerty, or Paul McCartney. List goes on. Time is drifting on by and these guys, hard to say but, old!”
“Hey, good answer. Here’s my question now: ‘If you have one chance and one choice, to when you would go most in your childhood?’”
“Honestly, I didn’t have a childhood moment like that mainly because it was lousy. It’s hard to tell, but it is. But if I would pick one memory, it would be my first trip to a funfair with my parents. I never forget the amusement – but really rare, you know. You?”
“Wow! I didn’t know that. It is hard for even me to pick one. But it would be any moment before my lousy youth. It was all freedom; that’s why I said it would make no difference at all.”
“Is there something you would likely to add?”
“Yeah. Before my youth, it was all innocence – maybe a bit of ignorance, as well; but it doesn’t matter. You are in heaven. But then, comes truth. I’m not talking about responsibilities or chores or anything. I’m talking about losing yourself, losing your beliefs, losing your temper, losing your soul… I’m not saying I regret I grew up, but at least it would be easy to live forever as a four-year-old child.”
“Yeah, but it would mean nothing. You wouldn’t realize the things that once built you as a person. You wouldn’t improve yourself. You would be in an endless dream.” My last word was hard for him, as I knew he had had a real tough youth.”
“Don’t keep saying the same thing, man, I know. It’s easier to grow and lose your dreams, lose what you desire, lose what you really feel and get rid of how to judge people by his/her religion, sex, political view, earning… The world would be a better place if we were all Peter Pans – believe me, because it sometimes becomes harder not to see the terrible news all around the world.”
“… But can you change anything? That’s the point.”
“By what?”
“By daydreaming.”
“You know what George Bernard once said: “You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, 'Why not?'” As I told you, I’m not into literature that much; but I’m into great lines and quotes.”
“Damn, that was too much for me.” We both laughed. “But I will try to live my dreams.”
“Yeah, man. You can still do that by lounging. Hah!”
It was funny how he can be good at times letting you get his point. He was not wrong, but he was damn down about time and those things. But the message I got was huge as I gazed the beautiful sea once more. Childhood times were your dreams!
