The Hex
He was bewitched. Her face echoed around the corner of his vision. Always there but never clear. He could not remember her face. Was that strange? That he could not remember her face?
But he remembered her eyes. Oh those eyes. What fool could forget those eyes. And her lips, and the way she felt when she was close to him. But he cannot remember her face. People gaze at him wondering if he is crazy. He has been wandering the streets for quite a while. Wandering without a destination. Without a purpose. He has been wandering because he can see her, Everytime he loses focus in his sight.
But as soon as he tries to catch a glance and the light of reason shines in his eyes. She is gone.
All that is left. Is a lingering memory. The acknowledgment
of a great loss. Hinting on a great sorrow too yawning and abysmal to be remembered as anything more than a nightmare. It is not important. Although the existence of this void within him is important. For that is one reason among many as to why he must know her face.
For he knows he once loved her.
And he is afraid he loves her still. He remembers the dance
they danced together, under happier skies and days gone by of color. He remember her laughter, and the chimes of bells, and stars endlessly shrouding a night in the wilderness. They were together that night. That he remembers for sure. In the faint currents of the thin air still rest the hint of her scent. And it is driving him mad, for he can remember her scent.
But he cannot remember her face.
Somewhere he hears her laughter and his step gains its pace.
An urgency that draws him to his destiny. A hook that tears at something inside. He ignores the obvious gasps around him as he charges though. They cannot know. They do not care. They do not see. They do not hear.
He sees her flash away around a turn and he rushes blindly
up a flight of stairs. Someone behind yells at him to stop. But he cannot stop not now…now when he was so close. He saw her standing back turned floating in mid air. And he knew this was the moment. The time in time. For she half turned and he caught a hint of a smile. She shimmered and a scream tore from his lips…it was small…for he had not eaten in a long while. But in his mind a scream tore from his lips and he reached out for her. This time he could not lose her. This time he could not forget.
She shimmered and for a moment he floated beside her shimmering in the sun and the color flew back into the world. He saw her face and she was still smiling. He met his oblivion with a smile on his face. And a smile in his heart. He saw her and now he could never forget her, never forget who she was. Never forget he loved her, and that she loved him still.
He saw her face and was not surprised. That he remembered it so well after all.
“Holy…sh….did you see that?”
“Fuck”
“Yeah man…shit I was like over there and then I saw the
guard yelling and I turned and this guy is like running full
on…”
“Yeah…freaking sucidals. Ruined my day.”
“…and I look back and the train’s right there. Like it was
almost scripted man…”
“…”
