(no title) Chapter One: Samantha Goldstone
Chapter One: Samantha Goldstone
7 years old
I am a dӕmon. No, not a creepy little goblin thing with horns and a tail that breaths fire. I look human, talk like a human, act human, do human things; I pretty much am human. Except, of course, for the big, black, feathered wings protruding from my back; and for the fact that I do magic. I use a certain magic called 'Glamour' to hide my wings from untrained eyes. I say untrained because there are some with 'The Sight' who can see past the Glamour and uncover the truth of what lies underneath. Since I am a dӕmon, I don't need The Sight to see the truth. If I were to concentrate hard enough, the Glamour would just melt away. But I haven't had to do that ever because I am the last of my kind. My family were all dӕmons like me. There was no one else; or so I was told.
My name is Samantha Goldstone. My mother was Maxine Whicker, and my father was Robert Goldstone. Not only am I the last of my kind, but I was (and still am) the only pureblood when my parents were still around. The reason why I was the only pureblood is because my family was in hiding; this is also the reason why we were the last ones alive. My kind was always hunted by the Priests. These are not your average priests, these men were hunters of my kind. They are members of an underground church clan called God's Blood. The Priests have been hunting and killing my kind for centuries. Purebloods were their trophies, we got it the worst. They would cut off your wings and scorch you with their symbol like cows. Once you were covered in 'God's Blood', they would finally kill you by setting you out in the sun, where you would die a slow and painful death.
My parents didn't want that for me; no parent did. So we went into hiding when I was two. We lived happily like that for five years; until they found us.
My parents never told me that they knew the Priests had found us and were hunting us now. They didn't tell me, but I knew something was wrong. Really wrong.
I wasn't allowed outside alone or after dark. When we were in the house, they would lock all the doors and windows; I wasn't allowed to shut my bedroom door if I was in there alone. My father would insist on staying with me in my room until I fell asleep. I could tell they were getting scared.
They would have hushed conversations behind my back. They would talk about things like "seeing Johnathan" and "finding the Dawns to warn them." I was confused by all of it. Who were the Dawns? What and why did we need to warn them about? Who is Johnathan? Why were my parents scared? Why were there so many rules all of a sudden?
I was sick of these new rules. I needed to check on my secret rose garden in the woods by the pond. That was my hiding place whenever I needed it. It was my own secret sanctuary. I loved going there when the moon was full. The roses would be bathed in a beautiful, silver light; making them even more breath-taking than before. Roses were my favorite flower. I loved the way they looked; I thought they were the most beautiful thing in the world. I loved the way they smelt of sweet beauty. And I loved the way their soft petals felt against my skin.
I couldn't wait another night; I had to see them. The night was perfect; it was warm, there were no clouds in sight, the moon was full and the stars were bright. Before my father came into my room, I made sure that I was able to open my window and sneak out without difficulty.
"Daddy?" I asked after he tucked me into my bed. The sheets smelt like lavender.
"Yes, Sammy?"
Sammy was my nickname my parents gave me when I was born. No one else was allowed to call me Sammy.
"Why do you stay in my room when I sleep?"
"I just want to make sure you're safe, because I love you so much," he replied while tickling me under my chin.
I giggled and tried to squirm away. "But what if I don't fall asleep ever?"
He smiled and kissed my forehead softly. When he pulled away, he looked into my eyes. I could see sadness in his.
He whispered softly, "Then I would stay awake with you and make sure no one would ever hurt you."
"Okay, Daddy," I whispered back.
He smiled again, but there was still that sadness in his eyes. He kissed my cheek and went back to his chair that he sat in when he was waiting for me to fall asleep.
"Daddy?" I asked again.
"Yes, Sammy?"
I wanted to ask him more. I wanted to know what was going on, but I didn't want to make him mad. So, instead I just smiled and said, "I love you."
He smiled back. "I love you too, baby girl."
With that I turned around; and waited.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An hour later, after I fell asleep, I woke up when my father closed my door. I heard him walk down the hallway and into his bedroom. I could hear my mother ask him something, but I couldn't tell what. Once their conversation stopped, I waited another half hour to make sure they were sleeping. I looked over at my bedside clock; it read 1:37 AM. I had four hours until the sun rose into the sky; just enough time to get to my roses and check on them, then get back safely before my parents woke up.
I quietly got up out of my bed and listened. All I could hear was my own breathing. I walked over to my closet and took out my favorite summer dress. It was white at the top and blue on the bottom. The colors were separated by a black satin sash that went across my waist and tied at the back. My mother gave it to me when the first of the spring flowers bloomed.
I swiftly undressed and pulled it on. I then went over to my window and unlocked it; it made a loud click and I froze instantly. When I didn't hear anything from my parents, I opened my window and climbed out.
I landed on the grass with a soft thud. I stood up and looked around. When I didn't see anything, I set off towards the woods.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'This,' I thought to myself as I entered the meadow I called a second home. 'Is my personal heaven.'
The meadow was beautiful. There was a huge willow tree hanging over a small pond and surrounding everything were the rose bushes. The ground was always covered in soft grass that tickled my feet. I looked at all the different colors of roses. The red ones were my favorite. They symbolized passion and romance; like my parents. No one else in the world were more in love with each other than my parents. I always wished that one day, I would find the same love that my mother and father shared. But for now, my roses were my love; I couldn't stay away from them.
I looked around myself at my roses, at the great willow tree, and the pond that shined under the moonlight, thinking that I could stay here forever... But I knew it was impossible. I had to get back; the sun was beginning to rise. I didn't realize how long I've been standing here day dreaming. I took one last glace at my roses, not knowing it would be my last, and started walking home. Little did I know that it wasn't home anymore...
