Who knew the little bird would grow wings
And fly over the legendary kings
Now the flying bird in the air swings
His sparkling coloured wings.
Who knew the little bird would learn to sing
Songs of beautiful tunes and rhymes
His had been lamenting ballads
Cursing Maryland plantations
But see how the singing bird sings
Of books, suits and wines.
Who knew the little bird would learn to feel
The sickness, tiredness and coldness
His had been cracking the rocks
With unquestionable willingness.
And who knew the little bird would fear not to perch
Upon every tall tree tops after long search
For which it’s little nest would beautifully hang
It, had been in the dark quiet cave
But see how its young ones come singing
From New York trimmed vegetation.
Mind not about tomorrow
Let tomorrow worry about you
Sing not the song you sang yesterday
A new one will take you through
You’re this fearless strong flying king
Not the one yesterday they overthrew
And you gotta go flying high with your new wings
No one will tell where you flew
But if you dare stare down at folks sing
You will fall down upon the floor
When I met Amanda for the first time, I
knew she couldn’t make a good soul mate because I had been made to believe she
couldn’t but I was young in some ways, I
didn’t know what my heart wanted most in a girl. Though she had sat before me many times, her
eyes telling me she loved me, I had never observed sincerity in her blue eyes.
All I know was that Amanda was a girl whose eyes scanned your pockets first
before she put her hands around your neck.
Guys said If you found her seated
alone in the reading room or under one of those luxuriant trees in the school
compound, pale and stressed then you knew she had some money problems, that her
problems were endless, that one, every boy at Gilen high school knew it well. I
had heard some little boys calling her zakariya, I didn’t know what it was
until a friend told me that it was a nick name for anyone who had a strong love
for money. So everyone knew her as girl interested in fleshly materials and
that was one of those things you couldn’t stand if you were the one dating her.
One day I felt like breaking all the promises I had built between us but it is
one those difficult decisions you can’t make quickly when you have been soaked
in love. I struggled with dilemma until I learnt that it was wise to write her
a chit for a meeting.
I went up, sat on the balcony and (...)

THE LAMENT OF THE DIVORCED HUSBAND
When you waved to me, Amanda
I liked it in my blindness,
I thought there were many in
Uganda
Far better or in your likeness
Now east, west I wander
Searching your likeness
But I have got none like you,
Amanda
They all lack your liveliness.
When I saw your back fading
away Amanda
With bags balancin’ in your
hands
I felt the whole world in my
hands
And I saw a thousand beauties on
my heels
But in a thousand I have got
none
I have got none like you,
Amanda

Oh my love…
You hold my heart with ought falling
You’re the dearest gift from above
That has the best glittering wrapping
And I hid in you so you’re my cave
Where I shelter when the rain is falling
Oh my love….
You have hidden my soul in the safe place
Better off than all other places
And you have said it’s gonna be our palace
Where men live with all pleasures
And we shall make our own race.
Oh my love…
You’re the map I hold in my hands
When hiking through the wildness
And I find a way through strange lands
So you take away my blindness.
Oh my love…
I’m nothing without your love,
I’m something with your arms around me

The road is for
